Iowa AmeriCorps 4-H Outreach members spearhead community and organizational efforts to provide youth with positive development experiences through youth-adult partnerships and research-based experiences. The program has reopened the host site application for the 2021-2022 grant year and applications are due July 9.
Celine Beggs has been selected as the program director of Iowa AmeriCorps 4-H Outreach with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach effective June 21. In this position, Beggs will oversee a $1.2 million grant that allows Iowa 4-H to place approximately 52 members in youth-serving host sites across the state.
The Iowa Gleaning Network received the Outstanding Volunteer or National Service Program Award at the 2021 Iowa Nonprofit Summit Oct. 7. The Iowa AmeriCorps 4-H Outreach program hires and manages the gleaning coordinators who work toward reaching the network’s goals.

Forty 4-H youth participated in Dairy Quiz Bowl, showcasing their extensive knowledge of dairy production, nutrition, anatomy and more.
This year, 247 youth from 49 Iowa counties participated in Iowa State University Extension and Outreach skillathons for dairy, meat goat, sheep and swine at the Iowa State Fair. Participants identified feed samples, breeds and meat cuts while answering questions about genetics, nutrients, quality assurance, handling and welfare.
Iowa 4-H celebrated record-breaking participation of over 6,000 entries in 4-H livestock and horticulture entries during the 2023 Iowa State Fair. Afterward, youth exhibitors donated over 100 pounds of their vegetables to the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines.
More than 170 4-H members from 34 counties participated in the 2023 State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. Participants were asked to evaluate eight classes of cattle, sheep, swine and meat goats, reviewing breed characteristics, physical conformation and structure, and gain efficiency.
Nearly 110 Iowa youth in grades 3-12 participated in an ISU Extension and Outreach three-day Equine Extravaganza in April, demonstrating their knowledge of equine-related subject matters.
