2016 Fruit and Vegetable Field Day (15 August, 2016)
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is hosting the 2016 Fruit and Vegetable Field Day on Monday, Aug. 15 at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station near Ames. The annual event will feature various research and demonstration projects on commercial fruit and vegetable production for farmers, extension personnel and Master Gardeners. It is free and supper is included.The ISU Horticulture Research Station is located at 55519 170th Street, Ames, IA. The field day will run from 2:00-6:30 p.m.
Growers will have a face-to-face opportunity to see ongoing fruit and vegetable research. This year’s field day will showcase small-scale fruit and vegetable production systems, cropping practices, research projects, and tools and equipment needed. There will be equipment on display from Windridge Implement LLC, Decorah, IA. There will also be a Plant and Insect Diagnostics Clinic where growers can learn how to identify key fruit and vegetable insects and diseases and also look at disease and insect samples. Ajay Nair, assistant professor of horticulture and extension vegetable production specialist and Diana Cochran, assistant professor and extension fruit specialist, are serving as hosts of the field day.
“This field day will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about sustainable tools, techniques, and approaches that can be integrated in fruit and vegetable production systems”. said Nair. “Projects highlighting high tunnel production, pest and disease management, cover cropping, hops production, tools and equipment for commercial production, etc. will be highlighted.”
Field day is in partnership with IFVGA, PFI, SARE, and Leopold Center. We will have grower organization representatives, non-profit organizations, and few vendors as well. Similar to previous years the field day is free to attend, but registration is required to order food and accommodate food preferences.
