AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host its annual Dairy Goat Management Seminar twice in December. This year’s focus is on management practices for profit.
The seminar will be held Friday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Historical Village Visitors Center, 715 D Ave., Kalona, and Saturday, Dec. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Sioux County Office, 400 Central Ave. NW, Suite 700, Orange City. The deadline to register for both locations is Dec. 9 at noon.
“Dairy goat production is an important industry in Iowa, especially in eastern and northwest Iowa,” said Jenn Bentley, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “We are very pleased to continue this educational opportunity with a lineup of quality speakers and presenters providing producers with practical take-home information.”
The program will cover the following topics and presenters:
- Do I Really Need to Spend that Much on Mineral and Vitamin Supplements? by Robert Van Saun, veterinarian, Penn State Extension
- What Is All the Fuss about Colostrum? by Robert Van Saun, veterinarian, Penn State Extension
- Respiratory Health in Dairy Goats by Amanda Kreuder, DVM and associate professor, and Rachel Friedrich, DVM and clinical associate professor, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine
- Dairy Goat Profit Analysis by Larry Tranel, dairy field specialist, ISU Extension and Outreach
The following additional sessions will be held at the Kalona location:
- Buck Management by Carolyn Ihde, small ruminant specialist, ISU Extension and Outreach
- Dairy Goat Producers Panel Discussion with Randy Adamson, Wisconsin, and Jeremy Franseen, Illinois
The following additional sessions will be held at the Orange City location:
- Advanced Reproduction Options by Katherine Taylor Jodlowski, small ruminant professional services veterinarian, Trans Ova Genetics and Taylor Ridge Dairy Goats
- Developing a Route for a Cooperative by Larry Hedrich, Quality Goat Milk Co-op
- Tools for Marketing by Kylie Nettinga, Western Iowa Dairy Alliance
- Virtual Tour: Favorite Creamery with Justin Korver, owner
- Panel discussion and Q&A with presenters
There is no registration fee to attend the program, but registration is required by registering online or by calling ahead.
