July 9, 2018

The I-29 Moo University will be highlighting best management practices on Boadwine Farms and Crosswind Jerseys during the “Treat Me Right” Implementing Best Management Practices Summer Tour. During the tour, there will be demonstrations of proper euthanasia techniques and discussions of farm biosecurity practices. Low-stress cow handling, newborn calf care and handling non-ambulatory animals will also be discussed to ensure animal health and welfare along with employee safety.

The Fifth Annual O’Brien County 4-H Foundation Pancake Breakfast will be held Tuesday, July 24 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Administration building on the O’Brien County Fairgrounds. Everyone is welcome. The meal will feature pancakes and sausage with choice of milk or orange juice. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of community, family and 4-H supporters all proceeds from the breakfast will go towards the O’Brien County 4-H Foundation.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has released the 2018 scheduled for its annual Farmland Leasing and Value meetings. The meetings are intended for current and prospective tenants and landlords, and are held across the state. Each meeting will cover: farmland ownership and tenue in Iowa; cover crop research and methods to implement in lease agreements; current cash rental rate and land value survey results; methods for determining fair rent for 2019; legal aspects of farmland leases including strategies for writing and terminating a farm lease; and ISU Extension and Outreach web-based and other resources.

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will host Stay Independent: A Healthy Aging Series this July at the Willoway Complex in Sutherland. The series is a nutrition and wellness program for adults age 60+ that provides information and tips to help aging adults remain healthy and independent.

“Nutrition risk assessments of older Iowans living in O’Brien County and surrounding counties revealed that nearly one out of four are at risk for malnutrition or are malnourished,” said Renee Sweers, a human sciences specialist in nutrition and wellness with ISU Extension and Outreach.
