Program Goals

Mowing to Monarchs is a program local to Dubuque County educating residents about planting, care, and benefits of small prairie patches planted on their land, also known as "pocket prairies".  You can find the informational materials of the program efforts below.

This program is a partnership between Dubuque County Conservation that supplies a set of free prairie plants for each participant and the Dubuque County Master Gardeners that supply information and mentorship on growing the plants.

Resources Shared with Participants

The Dubuque County Conservation board has funded planting a series of pocket prairies in homeowners yards since 2021.  The Dubuque County Master Gardeners have thoroughly researched and advised the homeowners planting the pocket prairies on how to achieve a healthy thriving habitat servicing local pollinator insects.  Below are the step-by-step publications shared with homeowners on how to approach their prairie establishment.
