Providing excess garden produce to area food pantries prevents food waste while providing fresh, nutritious food to families experiencing food insecurity. Share the Harvest is a guide to make donating produce or volunteering time easier for local gardeners in Southeast Iowa.

Small Change:  Building Financial Security
November 27, 2018

Improve your personal finance knowledge, skills and confidence and prepare yourself as a professional to address financial literacy in our schools!
Small Change is a blended (in-person and online) course designed for Iowa educators. Course content is embedded in the financial literacy standards of the Iowa Core 21st Century Skills and Social Studies and connects participants with curricula, resources and school-based programs for elementary, middle and high school levels. Educators can earn one Iowa License renewal credit.

If you are a Food Service Manager or worker and need to be certified for food safety, we have a class for you!  The classes in our area are in December, January 2019, February, March, April, May, and June.  Registration and payments are now online!

Fruits and vegetables

If you are a fruit and vegetable grower or interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Saety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and co-management of natural resourced and food safety, we have a class for you! 11 meetings will be held across the state during the Fall of 2018 and Winter of 2019. A training will be held in Burlington at the Great Prairie AEA (3601 West Avenue) on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Des Moines County 4-H is excited and proud to announce the establishment of a county endowment fund with the Iowa 4-H Foundation.  There are over 75 county endowment funds established with the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

The partnership of Des Moines County and Iowa 4-H foundation provides benefits to local supporters and the local 4-H program.  The county endowment fund replaces the formally known Friends of 4-H.  There are several ways to give towards the Des Moines County Endowment. Follow the link to get more information.
