Summer Programs

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dallas County offers fun and educational summer day camps in our community. The day camps are hands-on-experiences, thought provoking, and will challenge youth to use their creative mind. Choose your camp by grade level. The camps range from completed Kindergarten to 7th grade.

  • Full Day 6-Hour Experience
  • Half Day 3-Hour Experience
  • Mini Day 2-Hour Experience

2024 Summer Day Camps for Youth

Art Mini Camp

Grades: Completed K- 2 grades.

Instructor: Dallas County Extension Staff

This summer, open your creative mind with art. During this Mini Day youth will use different mediums of art (paint, markers, clay, pencils, paper and more.) Youth will be using their imagination to create a summer masterpiece.

Babysitting Basics

Grades: Completed 5 - 7 grades.

Instructor: Dallas County Extension Staff

Learn how to be a responsible and caring babysitter that parents will love to hire! Participants will learn about basic first aid, how to respond in emergencies, how to care for/entertain infants and young children, and the role and responsibilities of a good babysitter. This Full Day single-session course includes a babysitter manual, first aid kit, and diaper to use for practice.

Please bring your lunch and a water bottle.

Kids in The Kitchen

Let’s cook up a storm! Youth will learn the basics of cooking, using a Spend Smart Eat Smart recipe. Youth will become the chef. Every young chef will get to taste test their food.

On Their Own & OK

Grades: Completed 5 - 7 grades.

Imagine being Kevin from the Home Alone movie. Now, imagine what it would be like for you to stay at home alone. This Full Day workshop will teach middle school youth to be responsible, guiding them through procedures such as safety, emergency information, scheduling, watching siblings, and learning other skills on how to stay home alone. This is a family decision and has a family component to help guide their discussion.

Photography

Everyone has a story to tell. Come explore this Full Day of storytelling through photography by capturing moment-by-moment photos of objects, nature, and other still photo opportunities! Youth will learn the basics of photography and take pictures to create an art gallery for their families at the end of the day.  

Please bring your lunch, a water bottle, and your phone or digital camera to take pictures.

Ice Cream and Summer Coding with Cupcakes. Let’s celebrate the Summer with a Half Day of STEM. We will Scream for Ice Cream. Youth will learn the science behind making ice cream. Youth will learn about the basic sequencing steps of summer coding with cupcakes and more. And of course, taste-testing their yummy treats is a must. 

Please bring a water bottle.
