Free trainings on Youth Mental Health First Aid to be offered virtually

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Woodbury County is offering a free virtual course in Youth Mental Health First Aid. The course is being offered on two separate dates; Wednesday, December 9, 2020 and Thursday, January 14, 2021 via zoom.
 
Space is limited to 20 participants and registration is required.
 
The training goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break along with several short breaks. There is approximately two hours of pre-work that will need to be completed prior to the training. Once the training in finished, participants will be able to take an online quiz to receive a completion certificate.
 
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches adults who work with youth age 12 and older the skills they need to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health issues. Key issues that the course covers include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and substance use problems.
 
The training will teach participants how to apply the ALGEE action plan (Assess for risk of suicide or harm, Listen nonjudgmentally, Give reassurance and information, Encourage appropriate professional help, Encourage self-help and other support strategies).
