Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Women in Ag Leadership Conference
Meet Kayla Koether - Panelist
Kayla Koether is a Food Systems Specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach , located in Northeast Iowa. Koether will be speaking on the Start Your Own Networking Group panel at our Women in Ag Leadership Conference in Ames on November 28.
Koether has done a tremendous job in leading local peer groups and was instrumental in the growth of a beginning and niche farmer network of Region 4, the Northeast Iowa Food and Farm Network. Through her networking experience, Koether discovered just how many doors can be opened through the various relationships that are built.
“The more people you get actively involved in building relationships with, the more resources they can bring to the table to support each other,” said Koether. These resources can be flexible in helping all participants advance personally or professionally.
Koether uses existing relationships among community members and herself to build new ones that will grow networks of their own. She likes to utilize one-on-one conversations with individuals that express interest in building a networking group to allow them to suggest others for the group, or express what they would like to have brought to the group.
“Building relationships is an overt aim of the network. Each participant has expertise and experiences to bring to the table and learning is on-going, which is differe from a traditional one-off educational event,” Koether said. “Be genuine in asking others to be the driving force in the group.”
