ISU Extension and Outreach Women in Ag Leadership Conference, November 27-28, 2017
Discover Your Ag Leadership Strengths Workshop Announced
Last month we announced the Becoming a Cooperative Board Influencer workshop. This month, we’d like to tell you about another workshop opportunity, Discover Your Ag Leadership Strengths. These and other intensive workshops are offered on Monday evening, November 27, 2017 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, with dinner included.
Women are taking on more leadership of family farms. One in four Iowa farmers is a woman and women are the principal operators on 13% of Iowa farms. These women are contributing leadership by managing employees, marketing the farm’s products, mentoring the next generation, and making purchasing decisions. Taking a look at agribusiness, nearly 90% of women feel optimistic about their opportunity for advancement in agribusiness, while only 56% feel optimistic about their opportunities for advancement outside of agriculture, according to the 2014 Gender Roles and Equality in Agribusiness study. This is good news and demonstrates the incredible opportunities women in agriculture have today. In Iowa government, women comprise an average of 28% of local, county, state, and federal elected officials. In addition, women are becoming leaders of commodity groups and farm organizations and starting up their own local networking groups. That is a lot of leadership potential!
Whether you are taking charge in an agribusiness, out in the dairy barn, or around your farm family’s kitchen table, it is likely you will find yourself leading at some point in your life. This workshop is designed to help you recognize and utilize your own personal leadership strengths to the best of your abilities.
Dr. Jennifer Leptien, Iowa State University Interim Director for Learning Communities, and Lora Leigh Chrystal, Director of the Program for Women in Science and Engineering, will guide workshop participants in identifying their leadership strengths. Registrants will complete a Strengths Finder online assessment before the workshop. Through interactive activities and discussion, Dr. Leptien and Ms. Chrystal will help women develop their leadership by understanding the strengths they bring to the table.
