Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Women in Ag Leadership Conference
Discover Your Ag Leadership Strengths - Dr. Jennifer Leptien and Lora Leigh Chrystal
Dr. Jennifer Leptien and Lora Leigh Chrystal of Iowa State University will be hosting a workshop titled “Discovering Your Ag Leadership Strengths” as part of the Women in Ag Leadership Conference on Nov. 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.
Dr. Leptien is the Interim Director of Learning Communities at Iowa State University, and has conducted research with a focus on leadership skills and attributes.
Chrystal, Director of the Program for Women in Science & Engineering, has completed research concerning the role of women in leadership positions, particularly within STEM fields.
The session will be based on StrengthsFinder, an assessment that allows participants to discover their most predominant leadership characteristics. While engaging in the interactive session, attendees will learn how to become to most effective leader, from on the farm to inside of the boardroom.
“Students have really enjoyed the experience, and it is something they can incorporate into their career development,” Chrystal said.
As a result of the interactive components of the workshop, attendees will have the ability to learn about how their individual strengths can contribute to a collective effort.
“[StrengthsFinder] gives people an opportunity to really reflect on how to make solid, well rounded teams and looking for people who are different from themselves in order to have a more holistic approach to different situations and scenarios,” Leptien said.
Chrystal, who is primarily acclimated to applying the strengths assessment to women in the STEM field, is looking forward to seeing how women in agriculture deal with the challenges of their respective industry.
