Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Women in Ag Leadership Conference
Bring Out the Leader in You - Mary Foley Balvanz and Heather Lilienthal
Mary Foley Balvanz, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Leadership Training Manager, and Heather Lilienthal, Iowa Soybean Association Director of Producer Services, will present “Bring Out the Leader in You,” an intensive workshop to be held on Monday evening, Nov. 27.
The interactive session will allow attendees to determine the leadership characteristics of each other while identifying ways to overcome the barriers preventing them from exercising their strengths.
“The session will really focus on helping people understand that everybody has leadership qualities and leadership skills within themselves, and while there might be barriers or obstacles to putting those skills to work, there’s still reasons why you should go ahead and take those steps into leadership,” Foley Balvanz said.
As a result of the presentation being structured as a “facilitative process,” Foley Balvanz believes that the workshop will serve to be more effective and more engaging than the delivery of a traditional lecture.
“It is empowering for women to work together and find that they have common concerns and frustrations,” Foley Balvanz said.
Lilienthal anticipates that as a result of the conference’s ability to serve as a networking opportunity for attendees, women will learn how to build towards their next career move in leadership.
“Leadership isn't simply serving as the captain of the ship...it's also understanding how to be a leading member of the crew,” Lilienthal said. “Everyone who works on a team or with a family needs to understand how they effectively lead.”
The workshop will take place from 5:30 to 8:30pm on the evening prior to the Nov. 28th conference.
