Agronomy in the Field for Women to start April 18 in Benton/Iowa CountyAgronomy Flyer

Agronomy in the Field is a multi-session workshop being offered to women landowners, farmers, conservationists and other women who are interested in learning more about agronomy.  This series of workshops will be held biweekly in cooperation with Benton and Iowa County farmers. Each session will cover a topic related to crop production in Iowa and will take place on a farm in Iowa or Benton County.

The first session will be held on April 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the topic will be grazing cover crops and managing cover crops in the spring.  Bruce and Cindy Ballard will host the first meeting at their farm near Marengo, Iowa.  The farm location is 2358 110th St., Marengo, Iowa.  Iowa State University Extension and Outreach field agronomist, Meaghan Anderson, beef specialist, Denise Schwab, and Price Creek Watershed Coordinator, Rose Danaher, will help lead the group.

“We plan to spend this evening in the field, looking at cover crops and discussing their management,” said Schwab, “so come dressed to spend some time in the field.”

The goals of Agronomy in the Field are to strengthen agronomic skills for women that allow for better decision-making, provide a better understanding of inputs for crop production, see and understand different conservation practices and increase confidence in communication with spouse, farming partner, ag retailer or tenant.

“Through the rest of the cropping season, we will cover topics including corn, soybean, and pasture management, pest identification, water quality, and integrated pest management,” Anderson added.

This series is designed to be hands-on and conducted in the field to see real-time conditions.  Each session will be approximately an hour and a half long; you do not need to commit for the entire season to attend.

There is no charge for this series, but please register online to receive further updates on dates and locations for future sessions at or by contacting extension field agronomist, Meaghan Anderson at or 319-331-0058.

Agronomy in the Field is sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach in cooperation with NCR-SARE Partnership Grant Project ONC17-031.  Local support is provided by Benton and Iowa County Extension.
