Caylie Adam and Ruby Timp recently held a winter accessory drive to collect winter gear for area schools. The items were handed out to students who come to school without the necessary winter gear to play outside at recess. The items collected could be for students that forget these items or for students who can’t afford to purchase their own.
The girls did this project as part of their 4-H County Council Leadership project. Both girls are active in 4-H and the Winneshiek County 4-H County Council. Caylie is a member of the Prairie Shooting Stars 4-H club and Ruby is a member of the Turkey Valley Clovers 4-H Club.
A lot went into organizing this project including contacting all of the schools to see what their needs were, creating flyers to hang around the community, advertising in local newspapers and on KVIK/KNEI radio, creating drop off boxes, sorting through the donations, washing some of the donations, splitting the donations between the schools, and finally delivering the donations to the schools. Over 290 items were donated and distributed to five local schools including South Winneshiek Turkey Valley, St. Theresa’s, Decorah, and Postville.
Caylie and Ruby thank everyone for their support.
