Research & Winemaking Webinar- Wine Bottling & Closures

The Research and Winemaking webinar series that started in August 2020 is going on until December 8, 2020 with FREE webinars offered to all grape and wine industry members using mostly hybrid and climate-adapted grape varieties. The webinars are co-organized and hosted by Dr. Aude Watrelot, Assistant Professor of Enology at Iowa State University and Drew Horton, Enology Specialist at the University of Minnesota’s Grape Breeding & Enology Project.

During the 90-minute webinar on November 24th, 2020 at 3PM Central Time, Joe Lutomske (Enotools) will present on practical aspects of barrel maturation from a use and the selection of barrels to the maintenance of barrels and Aude Watrelot (Iowa State University) will present on research aspects of wine maturation in barrels.

SPACE IS LIMITED to the first 12 interested winemakers for our series of Iowa Winemaker's Roundtable events we'll be hosting over the course of the upcoming year. We are requiring a minimum of five winemakers confirmed to participate in order to host these events around the state, so feel free to invite your neighboring winery colleagues!

Winemakers are highly encouraged to bring any of the selected wine varietals/styles produced at your winery. You will be asked to share as much information about the history of the wines through submission of the registration form detailing the winemaking production information on the wines. All information will be kept confidential unless the group agrees to disclose their wines at the conclusion of the event. 

 

​The registration form must be completed no later than ONE WEEK prior to each event date to secure your registration. Registration is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Oxygen Management Workshop

Sign up to learn about how to improve your wine’s shelf life, reduce spoilage, and better manage inert gas and sulfur dioxide use in the winery.  This is a one-day workshop featuring Luke Holcombe of Scott Laboratories, as he shares knowledge and experience in managing oxygen throughout the winemaking process. Workshop registration includes lunch, course materials and hands-on demonstrations and activities

Wine Microbiology

Event Type: 

Participants will receive instruction and hands-on experience in microbiological lab techniques for winemaking, including microscope use. In addition, instruction will cover sanitation strategies and the sensory impact of spoilage microbes.

Attendees are invited to bring samples to observe under the microscope. (Optional)

Intensive Tasting Proficiency Training

Event Type: 

Come attend this two-evening course, hosted by the Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute at ISU, to examine the critical evaluation of wines! Participants will learn a variety of skills in wine evaluation to become proficient in tasting wines critically. The workshop begins with the major components in wine including sugars, acids, alcohols and tannins. Exercises will be completed in white and red wine aroma identification, varietal identification, wine flaws and faults, and consistency in scoring among others. This workshop is targeted toward consumers, specifically those who are wine enthusiasts! If you have already participated in previous Intensive Tasting Proficiency Training sessions, we encourage you to attend and re-train. The exercises remain the same, but the wines are different every time. There is always something new to learn and sensory training takes practice. Pre-registration is required to attend this course. Registration must be completed online prior to midnight, Nov. 1. You must be 21 years of age or older to attend this event.

Wine Cocktails

Event Type: 

Erin Norton will teach the fundamentals of making a delicious wine cocktails.  We will try several summer options featuring Iowa wines.   Then class will get a little hands-on and in small groups participants will create a cocktail to sample with the entire class.  Erin will include winter wine cocktail recipes like mulled wine and something special for Thanksgiving.
