Premier Exhibitor Contest - NEW FOR 2021!

4-H and Youth Livestock

Want to take your livestock knowledge to the next level?  Maybe you want your next showmanship challenge?  If so, consider signing up for the brand new Premier Exhibitor Contest at Westfair this year!

The contest is open to any Junior, Intermediate or Senior 4-H member in West Pottawattamie County currently exhibiting market beef, breeding heifers, sheep, swine, poultry, rabbits, goats or horses.  Participants can sign up for as many species as they wish, as long as they meet the animal ID requirements for that species.

How will the contest be judged?

  • Members must register through their club 4-H leader prior to June 1st.  Club leaders can access the sign up sheet here.
  • Participants will then be invited to complete a 20 question skillathon and 10-minute interview for their chosen species (see dates skillathons and interviews will be offered below)
  • Participants must turn in 2 pages of support material to the Extension Office by July 1st.  Support material can be any arrangement, but should include at least one project goal, learning involved, financial records and captioned pictures.  A rubric on what the support material will be judged on can be found below.
  • Participants will compete in a special "ranked" showmanship class during their respective show (register in Fair Entry by July 1)

What awards can I earn?

Awards (gift cards, animal supplies, 4-H bling, etc.) will be presented in EACH age category (Jr, Int, Sr) for EACH species (market beef, breeding heifer, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, horses, poultry).  These will be presented during the respective livestock shows at Westfair.  The top Junior, Intermediate and Senior member in each species will then be invited to the Livestock Auction on Monday, August 2nd for the announcement of the overall Premier Exhibitor in EACH species.  Overall species winners will receive $250.00 and a limited edition embroidered backpack!

Where can I find helpful resources?

Participants are encouraged to look over the study guides to get a feel for what may be asked on the skillathons or during the 10 minute interview.  The study guides may not give all the information or represent all the questions that will be asked, but they will be a good resource to start.  Paper copies can be obtained at the Extension Office.

When can I come do my skillathon and interview?

Members will be sent a Sign Up Genius link after registering with their club leader by June 1.  Skillathons and interviews will be offered at the West Pottawattamie Extension Office from either 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 4:00-6:00 p.m. on selected days.
