Ag in the Classroom Seeks Community Partners

Ag in the Classroom

Washington County Extension is seeking powerful community partners who want to invest in youth education and believe in the value of teaching agriculture in the classroom.  By providing students with Agriculture in the Classroom lessons during the school year, students are educated on the important role agriculture has on their daily lives.
We are reaching out to you in hopes you would be interested in this partnership to assist with the Youth Outreach Educator as she delivers the Agriculture in the Classroom program to area schools.  Your pledge would support her lessons and supplies as she educates Washington County youth about agriculture and where their food, fuel, and fiber come from.
This new program started in the 2019-2020 school year and was able to impact the five school districts in Washington County.  There were 39 classrooms visited with 725 students and 48 adults experiencing an average of six lessons throughout the year.  Topics included: beef, corn, dairy, soybeans, turkeys, water/soil conservation, farm crises of the 1980’s, and seed germination.

What is Agriculture in the Classroom?

·       Through creative lessons, hands-on experiences, and unique FarmChat® technology, we educate youth on the important role that agriculture plays in their everyday lives.
·       We connect all lessons to the Iowa Core; the Standards and Benchmarks that teachers must follow while teaching.

Why do we need to teach agriculture to our students?

·       Most students are three generations removed from the farm.  They need to be taught where their food comes from and how it gets to the table, where cotton comes from for the clothes they wear, and where the fuel comes from for the vehicles they ride in.

Current Partners with Washington County Extension:

·       Washington County Farm Bureau $12,000 annually
·       Washington County Corn Growers $1,000 annually
·       Brinton Trust $1,500 annually
It is our hope that you would make a multi-year commitment (similar to other sponsors) with an annual pledge gift for five years.  Included is the pledge sheet for pledging opportunities, please look and see how you can make a difference through this Agriculture in the Classroom program.  Please see the attached impact report from the 2019-2020 Washington County Agriculture in the Classroom program to see the teaching and learning in action.  If you would like more information about this program, please contact Diane Rinner drinner@iastate.eduto schedule a time.
