This blog was created to provide Golf Course Superintendents in the State of Iowa with a convenient way to communicate and collaborate with peers, industry professionals and educators. Interesting things are happening across the state, and this blog will serve as a vehicle to share articles, links, and pictures with turfgrass professionals in the state of Iowa. Anyone is welcome to submit to iaTURF. It's as simple as e-mailing your submission to I look forward to hearing from you!

IATurf Blog has moved to

Iowa State University Turfgrass is pleased to announce the launch of its fully-featured website The new site has extensive content including blog posts, publications, research reports, and news from across the state of Iowa. The highly successful IATurf Blog that reaches thousands of individuals will now be accessible from your tablet and phone.

The new website is designed to assist turf managers across Iowa with a one-stop shop for everything turfgrass. The website focuses on making information available to all individuals with a vested interest in turf industry, as well as highlight specialized advice and turf solutions. As part of our objective to provide critical information on the turf industry, Iowa State is proud to introduce the new website. Along with the launch of the new website, there are nine new publications added to the Iowa Extension store.

The first set of publications address common homeowner questions.  As temperatures warm and the calendar steadily marches forward, people across Iowa will soon find themselves working in their yards on a regular basis. With this work in mind, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has published four publications to serve as guides for residential yardwork. In addition to the general homeowner publications, five new publications focused on athletic field management were released. These focus on the planning required to keeping Iowa athletic fields aesthetically pleasing and more importantly safe. Managing traffic, interseeding and general maintenance of the field before, during and after the playing season are all important aspects to providing a smooth, even playing surface.

Commenting on a Post and Other Blog Tips

We have received a few questions regarding how to leave a comment for a post. Anyone can leave a comment, but there are a couple of different ways to go about doing so. At the bottom of each post, there is information regarding who posted the article, the date and time the article was posted, and if there are any comments on the post. (The envelope icon allows you to forward a post to someone using e-mail).

o leave a comment, just click on “0 comments” directly below the post. This will open a new screen where you type in your comment and some other information. Type your comment in the box provided. A “word verification” is located below the comment box. You will need to retype the word verification that appears on the screen. Next, you need to select an identity. The first two options require that you have a Google Account or an account already established with one of five Open ID services (Open ID, LiveJournal, WordPress, etc…). If you have one of these accounts and want to leave a comment, check the appropriate box and follow the directions.

If you don’t have one of those accounts, you will need to check “Name/URL” and type in your name (you can leave the “URL” box blank). If you wish to leave an anonymous comment, check the anonymous box. You can preview your comment by clicking on the “Preview Button”. This allows you to see your comment and make any last changes (if you need to make changes click on “edit comment” in the lower left hand corner of the comment box). Otherwise, click on “Publish Your Comment” and that’s it, you just commented on a post.

Another topic I’ll discuss quickly is how to subscribe to the blog. You may have noticed the “Subscribe via email” gadget along the right hand column. By subscribing to the blog, whenever a new post is added it will automatically be sent to the e-mail address you provide. This is an easy way to receive content without ever actually visiting the blog.

Happy Birthday iaTURF!

The blog turns one today. Can you believe how fast the time has gone? Here’s a quick recap from our first year of blogging.

- 113 articles on a wide variety of subjects were posted to the blog during its first year. Special thanks to everyone that contributed by sending in an article. The blog really becomes more dynamic when we can post information directly from industry professionals.

- The blog had over 11,000 visits from over 4,000 different visitors. We had visits from every state, except Alaska (Does anybody know someone in Alaska that can visit the site for us?) Iowa and the six surrounding states accounted for about 80% of the visits. Also, a shout out to Des Moines, Muscatine, Cedar Rapids, Ft. Dodge, and Urbandale for logging the most hits within the state of Iowa.

- The average time spent on the site was 1 minute 7 seconds. I’m actually really happy about that. Our goal is to get timely, relevant information to you. We’re not trying to write novels here!

- The blog caught the attention of the turf industry by being featured by GCSAA.

What’s next for iaTURF?

The entire goal of the blog was to get relevant information to you in a way convenient for you, and possibly have some fun while doing it. Continuing with that theme, we are launching an iaTURF Facebook page where you will be able to access information from the blog. You may have noticed the blue Facebook button at the top of the right hand column. This links directly to the iaTURF facebook page. Become of fan of the iaTURF Facebook page by clicking the “Like” button at the top of the page.
