On Their Own & Okay Youth Program Held

Nevada, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Story County office hosted the On Their Own and Okay youth program in January at the Gilbert Intermediate School.  Ten youth met weekly afterschool for threes week and identified ways to stay home on their own safely for a short time.  They recognized how house rules provide safety and identified activities that help avoid boredom or loneliness while home alone.  Students also learned to make simple snacks.
Safety was an important topic as students role played choices for the phone ringing or someone knocking at the door.  What to do in case of bad weather or a fire was also discussed along with how to handle first aid or emergency situations
