Summer Youth Opportunities with Story County Extension and Outreach
 
Summer youth opportunities are available through Story County Extension and Outreach.  Youth opportunities include in-person workshops as well as self-guided learning opportunities at home with Camp in a Box.  Registration information is available at www.extension.iastate.edu/story
 
Youth, in-person workshops have a $25 registration fee and $15 for each additional sibling.  Financial assistance is available by request.  Workshops will be held at the Story County Extension and Outreach office located at 1421 S Bell Ave. Suite 107 in Ames as well as locations throughout Story County.  Workshop topics include:

  • On Their Own and Okay for youth in grades 4-6 on June 2 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Babysitting Basics for students in 5th grade and up will be held at three locations:

    • June 3 at the Extension office from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
    • June 7 at the Huxley Library from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm
    • June 11 at the Roland Library from 10:30 am – 5:00 pm
  • AstroCamp will have students in grades 4-8 explore space on June 14 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Monarchs on the Move will have youth in grades 4-8 exploring life cycles, habitats, and more on June 10 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Ricochet Leadership is a two-day leadership program for middle school students in grades 5-8 and will be held June 17 from 9:00 am – 5 pm and June 18 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Mosquitoes and Me will be held for youth in grades 3-6 to explore this small insect on June 24 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.  This program is also offered on July 29.
  • Native Bees will be held July 8 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm for students in grades 4-8 to explore bees, pollination, habitat, and more.
  • Water Connects Us All will be for youth in grades 3-6 on July 15 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • WaterRocks! Biodiversity will be held for youth in grades K-3 on August 5 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Fizz Bubble Goo will be held for youth in grades K-3 on August 12 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

One self-guided Camp in a Box will be available each week from June 8 through August 10.  Each camp box is $25 per family and will consist of four activities with supplies.  Camp in a Box themes include: Pollinator Garden, Beyond Earth, Sound, Bridging Ideas, Pets, Art Attack, Iowa, Wind, Lighting, and Chemistry.  Additional boxes also available include Bits and Bots, Switch It Up, A New Look at Gardens, Garden Science, Homes and Habitats, and Exploring Engineering.
