4-H Ricochet Leadership Experience

Youth participating in activity at Ricochet Training

4-H Ricochet Leadership Experience January 14 & 15, 2018

Story County ISU Extension and Outreach is offering a 4-H Ricochet Leadership Program January 14 and 15 to youth in grades 5-8.  The interactive leadership program will be held at Fairview Lodge in Story City.  Cost is $25 per participant.  Registrations are due by January 5 and are available at www.extension.iastate.edu/story

Ricochet was designed by Iowa State  University Extension and Outreach Youth Development Specialists based on research outlined in the book — Youth Leadership: A Guide to Understanding Leadership Development in Adolescents by Josephine van Linden and Carl Fertman. The research lays out 3 stages of leadership development and 5 dimensions in each stage. Through activities, participants will learn Leadership Information, Leadership Attitudes, Communication, Decision Making, and Stress Management.

Participants will also ask leadership questions to a panel of community guests and the experience will culminate with a service project that the participants will plan and implement.  The program will be facilitated by ISU Extension and Outreach Youth Program Specialist Annette Brown and Story County ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Outreach Coordinator Mary Wilkins.

Ricochet has three levels that can be offered to middle school aged youth and even youth in high school to help them learn about leadership.  It may be implemented in a variety of ways (ie. meet monthly, a weekly afterschool experience, etc).  Ricochet 2 will also be offered to Ricochet 1 participants.  Ricochet 2 The Adventure Continues is being planned for March 23 and 24.
