Program Coordinator


ISU Extension and Outreach-Story County will utilize the Program Coordinator position to provide clients with friendly, efficient service and ISU research-based information while assisting and in teamwork with Executive Director (ED), County Staff and Field Specialists in the operation of the Story County Extension office.

Title:  Program Coordinator (PC)


Responsible to:  Story County Executive Director (ED)

General Position Description:   The Program Coordinator serves as Story County Extensions county -based education coordinator on topics related to large and small scale agriculture through collaboration with regional specialist serving Story County. This position coordinates the Story County Master Gardener program and volunteers. Additionally theProgram Coordinator serves as a member of general programming support, website maintenance and marketing and promotional materials.


This position is also a source of office client contact for advertised open office hours (8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday with two 15 minute paid breaks and one 30 minute unpaid lunch break). Lunch break will be staggered between this position and the Office Assistant to assure office coverage.


 The position is a full-time, 40 hour/week position. Consistent attendance, punctuality and ability to multi-task are a must. Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends is expected. Must have high level computer/technology skills, be detail oriented, and organized.


Minimum qualifications: HS Diploma. Preferred: Bachelor degree and one year experience.

AmeriCorps Youth Outreach Coordinator


Title:  AmeriCorps Youth Outreach Coordinator    

Responsible to:  Story County Extension Executive Director

General Position Description

A full-time AmeriCorps member will serve Story County to provide universal educational opportunities for all Story County youth, 4-H members, and new audiences, to expand youth programming through the use of the international Junior Master Gardener program. This individual will engage children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind.Using this program the member willinspire youth to be of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects. Through partnerships, the member’s service position will be targeted toward ensuring that youth have in their lives the essential resources of caring adults, safe places to learn, effective education, and opportunities to help other individuals.  The member will develop and organize educational activities that include workshops, afterschool programming, camps, and future 4-H/Clover Kids clubs.


Consistent attendance, good communication skills, self-direction and ability to work with minimal supervision are a must. Willingness to travel as some travel is expected.



  • Implement six hour programs by:
  • Partnering with Story County Master Gardeners (SCMG), schools and local agencies to offer a club experience during the school year with a focus on STEM activities through the topical area of food growth, food production, and healthy lifestyles
  • Utilize the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) the international youth gardening program of the University Extension system (created & managed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension) and related curriculum to guide their work
  • Organize routine afterschool and out of school learning opportunities utilizing JMG and supporting material
  • Offer day camp experiences during school breaks that will incorporate STEM learning through JMG
  • Develop summer day camps and healthy living experiences for youth in grades 1-6.  The location of these day camps will be throughout Story County
  • Plan and market JMG, STEM, and healthy living themed youth activities to implement as part of the 4-H fair experience for youth, families, and guests 
  • Work with the Story County Extension and SCMS to create a sustainable structure through partnerships to allow the program to continue beyond the term year


Essential Functions:

  • Provide safe, healthy, educational, and respectful learning environments for youth, family members, staff, community members, and volunteers
  • Complete contract service hours and site-specific responsibilities within the contracted time frame
  • Recruit and support youth to participate in educational programs and to join 4-H
  • Recruit, manage, and train community volunteers to assist with programs
  • Assist in addressing each of the AmeriCorps program’s programming objectives/performance measures
  • Document, collect, and report quantitative and qualitative impact data for quarterly progress reports
  • Accurately and professionally discuss with community partners and volunteers the objectives of the AmeriCorps program, five promises of Iowa’s Promise, site-specific objectives, and Iowa 4-H Youth Development
  • Attend trainings in preparation to teach specific curricula including JMG and related resources
  • Attend local training opportunities


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience and enjoyment working with youth
  • Hands-on experience in the areas of education, youth development, psychology, horticulture, or other related field
  • Knowledge of developmental youth milestones and characteristics
  • Experience recruiting and supporting volunteers
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Experience working with youth in classroom and/or informal youth programs
