Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Trainings rescheduled to July, August 2020

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach Field Agronomist Joel DeJong will host three Private Pesticide Applicator recertification trainings in Northwest Iowa during July and August. The trainings were canceled earlier this spring due to COVID-19, at which time the recertification training deadline was extended to Sept. 30, 2020.

DeJong says that the following trainings are being planned to allow for social distancing and appropriate precautions:

  • Thursday, July 23, 7:00 p.m. - First Presbyterian Church, Sibley; Call 712-754-3648 to pre-register.
  • Tuesday, July 28, 7:00 p.m. - Community Center, Primghar; Call 712-957-5045 to pre-register.
  • Monday, Aug. 3, 1:30 p.m. - Forster Community Center, Rock Rapids; Call 712-472-2576 to pre-register.

Pre-registration at least two days in advance of each training is required. DeJong encourages individuals to register early as there will be a maximum number of registrants accepted for each site to conform with social distancing requirements.

Individuals who do not feel comfortable attending large group gatherings should contact their local ISU Extension and Outreach office to set up an appointment to view the recorded private pesticide training video in their county office.

DeJong said that all private pesticide applicators who did not get their continuing education done before April 15, 2020, were given an extended deadline of Sept. 30, 2020. The three trainings scheduled for July and August are intended to enable producers to meet that Sept. 30 deadline. However, DeJong reminds applicators that they will still need to attend an upcoming winter program beginning in December if they choose the option of continuing education for their annual certification.

Renewing Your Certification - Option 1:

One way to renew your certification (recertify) is to attend a private applicator Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) each of the three years during your renewal cycle. Check the mailing label for your certification number and expiration date.

December 31, 2019 Expiration:

Attendance at CIC programs in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and attending a CIC program between December 2019 and Sept. 30, 2020 qualifies you for recertification.

December 31, 2020 Expiration:

Attendance at a CIC program in 2018-19 and attending CIC programs in 2019-20 and 2020-21 qualifies you for recertification.

December 31, 2021 Expiration:

If you wish to recertify by training and not by exam, you must attend a CIC program each year, starting with the 2019-20 program year.

Renewing Your Certification - Option 2:

A second way to recertify is to pass the certification test every three years. If you miss one year of CIC programs, Iowa law requires you to retest when your certification expires. The exam is given by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS).
