Local 4-H Member Named Grand Champion At 2014 Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show

Ryker Hickman, son of Doug and Susan Hickman, of Mount Ayr, raised the Grand Champion Market Broiler pen at the 2014 Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show in Omaha, Nebraska.  Ryker is a member of the Maloy Shamrocks 4-H Club.
4-H members interested in exhibiting market broilers at Ak-Sar-Ben were required to submit a request form by July 1st.  All those submitting forms received 50 broilers from Welps Hatchery in Bancroft, Iowa in early to mid-August. From those 50 birds, the 4-H members were able to pick out and exhibit a maximum of 2 pens of 3 birds.  Ak-Sar-Ben rules stated that each pen must weigh no more than 23 pounds to be eligible to compete.  Only the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Broilers were eligible to be sold at the Purple Ribbon Auction.  Ryker’s pen of Market Broilers brought $5750 from the buyer Suzanne & Walter Scott.
The Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show is a regional 4-H only Livestock Show that is open to 4-H members from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. The Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show is renowned for providing a level playing field for all 4-H members that exhibit livestock at the show.
