Organizational Professional Development Book Club -Privilege, Power, and Difference
Professional Development will be offering an on-line 4-week opportunity, June 11-July 2, 2020 to engage in cultural conversations with our colleagues centering around the book, Privilege, Power, and Difference, by Allan G. Johnson.
We will be meeting virtually each Thursday at 11:00 AM. Participants will have 1 week to read the selected chapter(s) and then discuss with a small group over Zoom for about 1 hour each week. This is not a lengthy text, with under 150 pages of reading. Written in an accessible, conversational style, the 3rd edition links theory with engaging examples in ways that enable readers to see the underlying nature and consequences of privilege and their connection to it. Johnson writes, “My work here is to help us meet that challenge by identifying tools for understanding what is going on and what it’s got to do with us without being swallowed up in a sea of guilt and blame, of denial and angry self-defense. It is to share a way of thinking about difference and what has been made of it. It is to remove barriers that stand between us and serious, long-term work across difference, and effective action for change that can make a difference.”
This is an opportunity to increase your knowledge around the topics of privilege, power, and difference and apply that knowledge to our work with all Iowans. It is also a chance and to get to know a few staff from across the state a bit better as we tackle topics that are important to our system!
If this is something you would like to actively participate in, we will have a few options available:
• No cost for registration if you have the book already and you just wish to be part of the book club.
• No cost for registration if you wish to download the eTextbook on your own to have an electronic version.
• $30.00 for registration if you would like a discounted paperback edition of the book, which we will send to you and will include shipping to your address of choice.
We will be limiting the size of the book club to the first 15 registrants. If the first club fills up and there are more who are interested we may be adding additional book club sections in the future. Deadline for registration is May 22.
If you have additional questions, please contact Gayle Coon. I look forward to having a conversation and grow our cultural competency together!
