Privilege Power and Difference Book Club

The Privilege Power and Difference book club is an optional, virtual four-week opportunity to engage in cultural conversations with our colleagues centering around the book, Privilege, Power, and Difference, by Allan G. Johnson.

This is not a lengthy text, with under 150 pages of reading. Written in an accessible, conversational style, the 3rd edition links theory with engaging examples in ways that enable readers to see the underlying nature and consequences of privilege and their connection to it.

My work here is to help us meet that challenge by identifying tools for understanding what is going on and what it’s got to do with us without being swallowed up in a sea of guilt and blame, of denial and angry self-defense. It is to share a way of thinking about difference and what has been made of it. It is to remove barriers that stand between us and serious, long-term work across differences, and effective action for change that can make a difference.

- Allan G. Johnson

This is an opportunity to increase your knowledge around the topics of privilege, power, and difference and apply that knowledge to our work with all Iowans. It is also a chance to get to know a few staff from across the state a bit better as we tackle topics that are important to our system!
