Copyright Overview & Best Practices

This online course will provide participants with:

  • The basic concepts and principles of copyright, including fair use
  • Information on copyright risks and best practices
  • A general overview of intellectual property

At the conclusion of the online course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize copyrighted materials
  • Articulate what rights and obligations are required when using copyrighted materials
  • Implement best practices for use of copyrighted materials
  • Identify and mitigate the risks of copyright infringement

This course is offered in a flipped format.

  • Independent study (asynchronous); 2 hours
  • Q&A sessions (synchronous); 1.5 – 3 hours   


  • May 7, 2018: course opens
  • May 7 – May 21: participants learn course material on their own schedule
  • May 22, 10:00-11:30am: online panel style Q&A session
  • May 24, 2:30-4:00pm: online panel style Q&A session
  • (Note: you can choose to attend either Q&A session, or both.)
