School Enrichment Programs Offered
The Poweshiek County Extension offers a variety of School Enrichment Programs:
Ag In The Classroom
Agriculture is a topic that students can easily connect to because they encounter it often. Nearly everything we eat, wear, use comes from plants and animals grown on farms. Local (Iowa) Agriculture and National Agriculture both provide perfect real-world connections and makes learning relevant to students.
Invent STEM
Invent STEM is an Iowa 4-H Program in partnership with Alliant Energy for youth that encourages youth to engage in the innovation process to solve real-world problems. Monthly challenges are given to youth involved.
Mindful Teen
Mindful Teen: From Surviving to THRIVING! is a six-lesson workshop series for youth based on the book, The Mindful Teen: Powerful Skills to Help You Handle Stress One Moment at a Time by Dr. Dzung Vo. The program can be implemented both in-person or virtually, empowering youth and equipping them with practical strategies and mindful practices to manage stress, difficult emotions, and improve and support their overall well-being, relationships, and performance in school, sports, the arts, and other daily activities.
Pick a Better Snack & Spend Smart Eat Smart
Life is busy, food is expensive, and kids can be picky eaters. Pick a Better Snack & Spend Smart Eat Smart teach youth how to eat healthy while on a budget.
Real Money Real World
Real Money Real World provides young people the opportunity to learn basic money management practices in the classroom and then make simulated lifestyle and budget choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis through a spending simulation.
Read Across Iowa
Read Across Iowa is a special event that is celebrated throughout the month of March to help motivate kids to read. This agriculturally themed event and the accompanying resources will feature books and materials that will bring the joys of reading to all students.
Ricochet
Ricochet: An Extreme Leadership Adventure is a middle school leadership initiative. To ricochet means to move round with a lot of energy, and be unpredictable - sort of like middle school youth. They bounce from one thing to the next trying on different roles as they find their place in the world. Ricochet uses adventure and experience to bring about learning. Kids will learn by doing things themselves. You can help them build their leadership skills, as they get involved in a real project that their community needs.
SWITCH
School Wellness Integration Targeting Child Health (SWITCH) is an innovative school wellness initiative designed to support and enhance school wellness programming. Through SWITCH, schools can help students to "Switch what they Do, View, and Chew!"
