ISU Extension and Outreach will offer several ServSafe® food safety certification courses throughout 2023

ALTOONA, IA (February 8, 2023) – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach in Polk and Dallas Counties will offer several ServSafe®  training courses throughout 2023. Registration is now open for the March course which will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at the ISU Extension and Outreach in Polk County office in Altoona. ServSafe® is a six-hour course for food safety professionals where they learn safe food handling, proper cleaning and sanitizing protocols, and additional food safety measures. 

"We live in a time where consumers and businesses are extremely conscious of health and safety procedures,” said Tom Keinert, ISU Extension and Outreach Human Sciences specialist. “By offering several ServSafe® courses to central Iowa food service professionals throughout the year, managers and their employees have convenient opportunities to be trained and up-to-speed on Iowa Code, food safety requirements and current best practices.”

The program is based on the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe® certification program and the Iowa Food Code. ISU Extesnion and Outreach in Polk and Dallas Counties will offer the following ServSafe® food protection manager courses:

Polk County 
All courses are at the ISU Extension and Outreach in Polk County office at 1625 Adventureland Dr; Altoona, IA 50009
•    Tuesday, March 21, 2023
•    Tuesday, May 23, 2023
•    Monday, July 17, 2023
•    Monday, September 25, 2023
•    Monday, November 13, 2023

Dallas County 
•    Monday, April 10, 2023 – Dallas County Conservation Board; 14581 K Avenue; Perry, IA 50220
•    Monday, August 7, 2023 – ISU Extension and Outreach in Dallas County
•    Tuesday, October 10, 2023 – Dallas County Conservation Board


“It’s worth noting that this class isn’t limited to just restaurant employees. It can really be beneficial for food service managers from other areas like schools, convenience stores, childcare centers, senior meal sites and health care,” Keinert said. 

Cost is $160 per person or $110 if the participant is a member of the Iowa Restaurant Association. Participants will receive a copy of the ServSafe® Food Safety Manager training manual and will take the ServSafe® certification exam at the end of the course.
