AMES, Iowa ― An updated version of the Category 3 Greenhouse Pest Management – Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator Manual (CS 0015B) is available from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
The newly revised publication covers the plant pathogens, insects, mites and weeds common in Iowa’s greenhouse settings and the strategies used in managing these pests. The manual has been developed for individuals who want to become certified as a commercial and public pesticide applicator.
“This guide serves multiple purposes,” said Mark Shour, entomology program specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “Not only is it a study guide, but it can be carried in the vehicle of a certified pesticide applicator or kept in their office to serve as a reference guide for questions about specific pests or the timing of treatment.”
The 179 page manual was written with input from subject matter experts across Iowa. Color photographs and detailed pest information are included for plant diseases, weeds, insects and other non-vertebrate pests that need to be managed in greenhouse environments.
The publication also contains an extensive glossary of terms and references for further reading.
“Other state manuals are short, sweet and to the point,” Shour said. “This Iowa manual goes beyond the norm. It is a great professional development resource both for beginning and experienced pest managers.”
The accompanying new certification examination will be available starting Aug. 1, 2018, at testing locations currently approved by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Until that time the current certification manual and exam will be used.
This category manual supplements information in the Iowa Core Manual (CS 0445) and should not be used for certification preparation without referring to that manual.
