Siouxland Garden Symposium Set for March 16

Siouxland Garden Symposium.SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Siouxland Garden Symposium, formerly known as the Siouxland Garden Show, is set for March 16 at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Sioux City.

“This annual event promises to be a day filled with inspiration and knowledge for garden enthusiasts,” said Lindsay Meylor, horticulture coordinator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Woodbury County.

This year's symposium will feature a lineup of four expert speakers covering a diverse range of topics of interest to the gardening community. The event will kick off with check-in and refreshments at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. A luncheon will be catered by Aggie's of Sergeant Bluff.

Stephanie Barelman, the keynote speaker, hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, is sponsored by Loess Hills Wild Ones. Barelman is the host and content creator for the Plant Native Nebraska podcast, founder of the Bellevue Native Plant Society established in 2019 and a freelance pollinator landscapes designer. Her topic, "The New Midwestern Cottage Garden - How the Heartland of America Can Redefine Whimsical Gardenscapes with Native Plants," will explore the world of native plants and garden design.

Ajay Nair, a horticulture professor at Iowa State University specializing in sustainable vegetable production, will share insights into "All Things Tomato." His expertise will provide attendees with information on cultivating and caring for this garden staple.

Sarah Browning, a Nebraska Extension educator specializing in fruit and vegetable production and food safety, will lead a discussion on “Soil and Soil Health.” She will provide insights for enhancing the fertility and productivity of garden soil.

Amanda Beck, a grower from Natural Beauty, will round off the symposium with a presentation on how to "Add Interest to Your Garden with Form and Texture," providing attendees with creative ideas to make their gardens visually stunning.

The Siouxland Garden Symposium is designed to be an enriching experience for garden enthusiasts of all levels. It is an opportunity to learn from experts, exchange ideas with fellow gardeners and kickstart your gardening journey in 2024.
