Preventive Controls for Animal Food Course to Be Offered

Federal food safety training requirements to be offered online

AMES, Iowa – A first-of-its-kind, online interactive course will be held Oct. 27 and 29 leading to the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance designation as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual for the Food Safety Modernization Act Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the American Feed Industry Association are offering the course. The fee is $300, and the registration deadline is midnight on Oct. 23.

grain handling facility.The course is intended for individuals needing to create FSMA Hazard Analysis Risk Based Preventive Control plans for their animal food facilities.

“The FSMA requires facilities processing any type of animal food (complete feed or ingredients) to comply with new current good manufacturing practices and to implement a written animal food safety plan developed and overseen by a ‘preventive controls qualified individual,’” said Kyle Poorman, communications manager for the Iowa Grain Quality Initiative with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Prerequisite: This is the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance-designated Part 2 completion of the PCQI certificate class, to be taken after the fully online Part 1 available directly from FSPCA.
