AMES, Iowa – Clear communication between employers and employees has never been more crucial than during pandemic-related changes in the workplace.
In the most recent Back to Business Iowa podcast episode, Maartje Schouten, assistant professor of management at Iowa State University, offers timely tips on effective human resources management during COVID-19. Hear the episode at www.extension.iastate.edu/ffed/enterprise-development.
First, Schouten says, know the rules. Learn what the state is mandating for your type of business when you reopen. Then, consider the value of your employees and listen to their concerns about safety in the workplace when they return to work. Finally, create a thoughtful, mindful plan for reopening. Make sure it spells out all of your safety measures, testing policies, and other changes for both employees and customers. Then communicate that clearly to both audiences.
Schouten also points out that communicating primarily through email doesn’t allow for team members to interpret non-verbal signals, which carry important messages. She recommends that employers create informal opportunities to interact virtually, to boost morale and improve two-way communication.
Other topics in this episode include the impact of COVID-19 on recruitment and retention, leave policy and more.
