Northeast Research Farm to Hold Spring Field Day

Topics will include plant protection, soil fertility management and weather trends

NASHUA, Iowa – The annual spring field day at Iowa State University’s Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm will be held Wednesday, June 22, from 1-4:30 p.m.

Terry Basol, field agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, said topics will include plant protection strategies, soil fertility management and current weather trends.

Farm tour in progress.“We will be taking a look at some of the most important considerations for farmers this year in northeast Iowa,” said Basol. “A big factor continues to be the high price for fertilizer, so we will take a look at some of the in-season  agronomic strategies farmers can do regarding fertility decisions.”

Dennis Todey, director of the USDA Midwest Climate Hub, will begin the program by providing his insights on crop weather and trends for the 2022 growing season. Antonio Mallarino, professor and extension fertility specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, will share his insights on proper soil fertility management with regard to current fertilizer prices.

Greg Tylka, professor and extension pathologist and nematologist, will provide updates on soybean cyst nematode management. Alison Robertson, professor and extension plant pathologist, will provide an update on crop diseases and tar spot management.

The field day is free and open to the public. The event starts at the Borlaug Learning Center Headquarters on the Iowa Northeast Research Farm and Demonstration Farm.

Directions: From Nashua at the Junction of Highway 218 (Exit 220) and County Road B60, go west on B60 1.1 miles to Windfall Ave., then south 1 mile to 290th St., then east 0.2 miles to the farm.
