AMES, Iowa – Iowans have new tools to help them eat healthy and stick to a tight budget. “Spend Smart. Eat Smart.” from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offers a redesigned website and new companion mobile app for use at the grocery store.
Both are simple to navigate and are designed to help Iowans meet their goals to make healthy food choices, plan meals or save money at the grocery store, said Christine Hradek, a human sciences specialist.
On the website, Hradek said Iowans will find
- more than 150 recipes that are delicious, inexpensive and easy to prepare;
- how-to videos featuring recipes, kitchen organization tips and basic food prep techniques;
- strategies for saving money in each part of the grocery store; and
- meal planning templates and resources.
“Now, you can carry ‘Spend Smart. Eat Smart.’ in the palm of your hand at the grocery store with our free mobile app. The app’s tools make it easier to eat healthy and stick to your budget,” Hradek said.
The app’s produce basics include information on choosing, cleaning, storing and preparing fresh fruits and vegetables. Use the recipe finder to keep track of favorite recipes from the website. The unit price calculator helps shoppers compare products to find the best price.
“Managing a household can be difficult enough. ‘Spend Smart. Eat Smart.’ makes meal-planning, cooking and shopping easier,” Hradek said.
Download the “Spend Smart. Eat Smart.” app for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
