AMES, Iowa – After an internal search, Carol Heaverlo has been selected as the director of extension operations with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach effective Sept. 8. Heaverlo will provide leadership to ISU Extension and Outreach support units and strengthen ties to program units and county services.
“Carol will lead the identification of innovative initiatives and projects that enhance our educational programs, products and materials to ensure ISU Extension and Outreach stays relevant for years to come as we build a #strongIowa,” said John Lawrence, vice president for extension and outreach.
Heaverlo will lead operational and strategic processes with the service units’ management, the individual employees within those units, and other internal and external projects as appropriate. She will oversee the following units:
- Professional Development.
- Grants Administration.
- Organizational Advancement Multimedia and Creative Services.
- Organizational Advancement Communications.
- Extension Store.
- Extension Information Technology.
- Program Development and Evaluation.
- Conference Planning and Management.
- Conference Planning and Management Registration Services.
Since 2014 Heaverlo served as ISU Extension and Outreach’s director of professional development. She also worked as the director of extension education for ISU Extension and Outreach in Ida County from 2000-2005 and worked for the Program for Women in Science and Engineering from 2005-2014.
Heaverlo’s professional interests include equity in education and development of adult learners, leadership development, and inclusion and retention in STEM. Her dissertation research on STEM development is utilized by more than 1,262 institutions and 127 countries around the world and has been published in the American Journal of Engineering Education and the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering.
Heaverlo earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Mount Mercy University, a master’s in biology from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Ph.D. in higher education leadership and policy studies from Iowa State University.
