AMES, Iowa –Thirteen teams of 4-H members tested their knowledge in the annual Dairy Quiz Bowl held at Starmont High School in Arlington, Iowa, on June 20. Youth from four counties attended the event and applied their knowledge to topics ranging from dairy anatomy to types of cheese and everything in between. Forty-seven youth participated in the event.
The Dairy Quiz Bowl allows 4-H members to apply their fact and experience-based knowledge of the dairy industry. The winning team of senior 4-H members also has the opportunity to compete at the National Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Kentucky, in November.
Event coordinator Mike Anderson, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H youth program specialist, said, “I’m always impressed with the knowledge level of these young people. The questions developed for this event are significantly challenging.”
The winning junior team was from Delaware County and included Audrey Kruse, Bianka Ronnebaum, Ty Hoeger and Ford Domeyer. The winning intermediate team was also from Delaware County and included Courtney Goedken, Alia Domeyer, Haley Ronnebaum and Lane Domeyer. The winning senior team will represent Iowa at the 2019 National Dairy Quiz Bowl. This team was also from Delaware County and included Tara Goedken, Sarah Goedken, Lauren Goldsmith and Amber Engelken. Delaware County’s teams were coached by Jennifer Zumbach and Brian Bagge.
The written exam was completed before the day of the quiz bowl. Scores were used to determine seeding and counted towards an overall portion of the score. Awards were given to the top scorers in each age group. In the junior division, the top test score was from Ty Hoeger from Delaware County. Topping the intermediate division was Louis Hamlett from Fayette County. At the top of the senior division was Amber Engelken from Delaware County.
Dairy Quiz bowl was conducted by ISU Extension and Outreach and the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State.
