2018 ServSafe® Food Safety Certification Course


Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Muscatine County will be hosting ServSafe® food safety certification courses at the Muscatine County Extension office on the following dates in 2018.  Classes are 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.  Registration deadlines are three weeks prior to the class dates.  Class sizes are limited.

  • Wednesday, April ll, 2018................. Online Registration Deadline:  March 21, 2018
  • Wednesday, August 29, 2018............Online Registration Deadline:  August 8, 2018 
  • Wednesday, October 10, 2018..........Online Registration Deadline:  September 19, 201

For restaurants and foodservice managers and workers, ServSafe® is the food safety certification course developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and is one of several recognized by the Conference on Food Protection.
The 8-hour course concludes with a certification exam. Iowa regulations require the person in charge of a foodservice to have demonstrated knowledge of food safety principles; ServSafe® certification is one way to demonstrate this knowledge. Certificates are valid for five years. Participants receive a course book. Cost is $150 for Non-IRA members and $100 for IRA members.

Training Description

Created by the industry for the industry, the ServSafe® food safety training program is one of the industry’s strongest educational programs. It is administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering special training to help you meet the industry standards and your obligation to consumers. ServSafe® is recognized by more federal, state and local health jurisdictions than any other food safety training program in the United States.

  • Meets Certified Food Protection Manager requirements.
  • All participants must successfully pass the exam in order to be certified by the NRAEF.
  • A 75% or higher exam score is required for certification.
  • Certification is valid for five years.
  • A photo ID is required to take the certification exam.



Class begins at 9 a.m. Exam will start about 4 p.m.

If you are pre-registered and want to study ahead of time, contact vstokes@iastate.edu to arrange to receive the ServSafe Manager Manual prior to your scheduled class.

Training Option

If you do not require your employees to be certified, but want them to have further food sanitation and safety education, consider this option:

  • SafeFood—$35/person
  • This 2 hour program is based on ServSafe® and designed to educate all food handlers about food safety basics. Sessions are individually scheduled by contacting Vera Stokes at 563-659-5125 or email vstokes@iastate.edu
  • A minimum of 10 people is needed to hold a session. Businesses can combine staff to meet the minimum attendance requirements.
