In the Broiler Derby Contest, participants provide a comprehensive record of their experience of raising broiler chickens. Participants are judged on both their records and an interview as well as live standards for poultry.
Chicks are ordered through the Muscatine County Extension Office and then picked up by participants to be taken home and raised.
There is a minimum order of five chicks per participant and will be shown in a pen of three at the fair. Chicks are $3.50 per bird ($17.50 for every five birds.) Birds must be ordered by May 1, through the sign up form or by calling the Muscatine County Extension Office (563-263-5701). Payment is due at the time of chick pick-up, the week of June 1.
If extra birds are purchased you may enter them in the 4-H pen of three, Market class 200 or 210. Example: If you buy eight birds, enter three in the Broiler Derby Class 300 and three in a market class.
