Big changes in a child’s life, such as getting a sibling or moving to a new home, bring big transitions, as the child learns to adapt to the new situation. Although learning to manage big transitions is important for children’s development, learning to manage the small transitions of daily life is equally important, according to Kim Brantner, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

On Their Own & OK

On Their Own and OK is designed to prepare young people to be home alone while a parent is away. This may be before school, after school, or a more extended period of time like summer vacation days. Topics covered include dealing with boredom, preparing snacks, and handling emergencies.

Farmland Values
December 13, 2018

After a reprieve in 2017, commodity prices, interest rates and trade disruptions drove Iowa farmland values down for the fourth time in five years. The average statewide value of an acre of farmland is now estimated to be $7,264. This represents a decrease of 0.8 percent, or $62 per acre, from the 2017 estimate. Land values were determined by the 2018 Iowa State University Land Value Survey.

The strawberry beds are covered with mulch, chicken wire is around the young trees and the hybrid-tea roses are covered with several inches of soil and straw for the winter. Next gardening task is to store supplies and tools for the winter. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offer a few late fall storage tips.
