Come to Glenwood for this presentation by Jim Locklear, Director of Conservation at Lauritzen Gardens Botanical Center. He will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation program of Lauritzen Gardens. This work includes studies of endangered plants in Nebraska and the Great Plains, efforts to nurture the environmental health of the lands and plantings of Lauritzen Gardens, and the recent creation of a Conservation Discovery Garden.
Come to Glenwood to hear from Annette Wiles from Midwest Hops Producers will provide a presentation on her family’s business to establish a well-managed hop growers enterprise in our region. Annette and Bruce Wiles are the owners of a group of startup companies based in Plattsmouth, Nebraska focused on the production and processing of hops for use in brewing beer. Their mission is to provide local farmers with a high-value crop that returns the majority of the crop value back to the growers, and provides high quality whole leaf and pelletized hops to everyone from craft brewers to home brewers while maximizing environmental stewardship through sustainable practices.
Come to hear a presentation in Glenwood from Gabbi Edwards, Urban Forester with Iowa State University Extension will provide a presentation on best practices for how to correctly prune trees including hardwoods, fruit trees and shrubs. Additional topics include why pruning is important to prevent hazard trees, diseases and pests, when to prune, and general cutting techniques. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of their existing yard and Gabbi will answer questions as time allows.
Come to Glenwood to hear a presentation by Nancy Scott, Mills County Master Gardener and volunteer with the Farmer-to-Farmer program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide a presentation on her recent trip to Senegal West Africa to work with native villages on food security. Nancy traveled to Senegal in January 2017 and taught classes to the native people on food preservation in austere environments where there are very few modern conveniences.
Come to Glenwood for a presenation by Chris Ruhaak and Eric Moen from Loess Hills Beekeeping Association will share their experience as a beekeepers, and provide a presentation and how home gardeners and acreage owners can help honey bees and other pollinators by creating a safe habitat for them to feed throughout the growing season. They will also touch on the subject of how honeybees and other pollinators are threatened in our environment, and the safe use of pesticides and some substitute deterrence for insect pests.
Come to Glenwood for a presentation by Kelly Guilbeau from the Milkweed Matters RAGBRAI team. Kelly will provide a presentation on the RAGBRAI Milkweed Seedball Initiative, a grass roots conservation effort to restore habitat for the threatened Monarch butterfly. She will talk about why the Monarch butterfly is threatened and how important Iowa and the Midwest are for helping the Monarch butterfly survive their epic migration to Mexico. She will discuss the status of Monarch butterfly populations, describe the RAGBRAI Milkweed Seedball intiative, and educational outreach throughout communities in Iowa.
