Come to Glenwood for a presenation by Chris Ruhaak and Eric Moen from Loess Hills Beekeeping Association will share their experience as a beekeepers, and provide a presentation and how home gardeners and acreage owners can help honey bees and other pollinators by creating a safe habitat for them to feed throughout the growing season. They will also touch on the subject of how honeybees and other pollinators are threatened in our environment, and the safe use of pesticides and some substitute deterrence for insect pests.

Butterfly Rearing

Butterfly Rearing Presentation


Monarch butterfly populations are currently low due to many factors.  One way citizen scientists can help populations rise is to rear monarch caterpillars or assist the monarch caterpillar reach the adult stage.  Learn how to rear monarch caterpillars into butterflies on Thursday, August 31 at 7 pm. The Richardson family reared their first monarch caterpillar following the State Fair in 2013.   They have reared them each year since increasing in number as well, and reared 96 in 2016.  Minnie Richardson and her daughter Grace will explain the process and some of the tips they have learned. 


This event will be held at the Mahaska County Extension office, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa.  It is hosted by the Mahaska County Master Gardeners.  It is however open to anyone (of all ages) interested in the topic and there is no fee to attend.

Moth-ers Day (Davenport)

On Saturday, July 28, the Iowa State University-Scott County Extension Master Gardener program will join forces with the Nahant Marsh Education Center, 4220 Wapello Ave., Davenport, to present its 4th annual Moth-ers Day celebration. The family-oriented learning event will begin at 8 p.m. with an hour-long lecture.

Then participants will go outside to see what moths have been attracted to white sheets lighted by ultraviolet lights. The UV lighting will continue until midnight.
