Installing a Butterfly and Pollinator Garden

Thursday, May 19th beginning at 5pm, City Horticulturist, Kelly Goossen will be providing a workshop on planting and installing a pollinator garden at A.Y. McDonald Park in Dubuque
 
Kelly will share strategies on how to prepare the site, select plants, and address seasonal maintenance in a pollinator garden. Participants will also have the opportunity to help plant the new pollinator garden on-site, learning proper planting techniques, landscape design elements, and bloom time ranges for pollinator diversity throughout the season.

Come to Glenwood for a presenation by Chris Ruhaak and Eric Moen from Loess Hills Beekeeping Association will share their experience as a beekeepers, and provide a presentation and how home gardeners and acreage owners can help honey bees and other pollinators by creating a safe habitat for them to feed throughout the growing season. They will also touch on the subject of how honeybees and other pollinators are threatened in our environment, and the safe use of pesticides and some substitute deterrence for insect pests.

RAGBRAI Milkweed Seedball Initiative

Come to Glenwood for a presentation by Kelly Guilbeau from the Milkweed Matters RAGBRAI team. Kelly will provide a presentation on the RAGBRAI Milkweed Seedball Initiative, a grass roots conservation effort to restore habitat for the threatened Monarch butterfly. She will talk about why the Monarch butterfly is threatened and how important Iowa and the Midwest are for helping the Monarch butterfly survive their epic migration to Mexico. She will discuss the status of Monarch butterfly populations, describe the RAGBRAI Milkweed Seedball intiative, and educational outreach throughout communities in Iowa.

Backyard Habitat for Birds, Bees, and Butterflies with Patty Reisinger


Hosted in Manchester, Iowa


Patty is a horticulturist who has been with Trees Forever since 1991, coordinating tree planting events and helping train volunteers with tree selection, all aspects of planting and care, reviewing site plans, and facilitating local efforts.  Patty has a B.S. in Horticulture from Iowa State University and is also an International Society of Arboriculture member and ISA Certified Arborist. 

Butterfly and bee habitats have been in decline over past years.  Patty will be showcasing large and small scale plant projects that will help all yards bloom and make happy homes for pollinators.  To learn what flowers, plants, and trees make the best habitats for butterflies and bees, be sure to be at this program on March 27th.

Cedar Falls - Starting in Mid-April and running through May 18th, local Master Gardeners and growing experts will be presenting live classes on a variety of gardening and growing topics. In most cases, the same topic will be covered at both libraries on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the same week. This will allow more people access to the information and a greater chance for people to attend a class they may have missed.

These classes are FREE and open to the public. There is no pre-registration and the public may attend as many or few classes as they wish as these class topics are presented as individual units. Doors open at 6:45 each night with the classes starting at 7pm and running for about 1 hour with time for questions and answers afterward.
