Tychonievich is the author of Plant Breeding for the Home Gardener, The Complete Guide to Gardeners, and Rock Gardening: Reimagining a Classic Style and is the editor of the North American Rock.

The Sept. 20-21, 2018, Gardening School, previously known as Gardening Study School, has been approved by National Garden Clubs, Inc. It will be at the Iowa Arboretum, Hughes Education Center, rural Madrid, IA.

Run for the Trees

The Arbor Day celebration of trees starts at 9am and is free to the public. There will be a variety of activities including tree climbing, guided by Iowa Arborist Association members. Join David Culp, author and designer, for a captivating day of gardening talks. David Culp will show us how to recreate the majestic display of his beloved two-acre Pennsylvania garden, Brandywine Cottage. It contains a basic lesson in layering—how to choose the correct plants by understanding how they grow and change throughout the seasons, how to design a layered garden, and tips on maintaining it.
