Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop

Each participant gets two apple rootstock (EMLA7 free standing semi-dwarf) which they self-graft and take home with them.  If they want to bring in some of their own scion wood that is fine as well.  Ideally it should be harvested before third week of March.  It should be new growth from previous year and be somewhere close to pencil thickness in diameter.  For more detail see:

Fee structure is $35 per person or $60  for couple ($30 for any two or more registering together and includes 2 rootstock for each person).  Additional rootstock will be available for a cost of $5 each.  We will need at least  12 people pre-registered.

The ISU Scott County Extension and Outreach Master Gardeners will present ‘Growing Along the River’ Focus on Fall, an all-day conference with presentations about landscaping and gardening. It is not too late to learn more about ‘putting your garden to bed’ and how to enhance and manage it this fall.


How to prune trees

Come to hear a presentation in Glenwood from Gabbi Edwards, Urban Forester with Iowa State University Extension will provide a presentation on best practices for how to correctly prune trees including hardwoods, fruit trees and shrubs. Additional topics include why pruning is important to prevent hazard trees, diseases and pests, when to prune, and general cutting techniques. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of their existing yard and Gabbi will answer questions as time allows.

Run for the Trees

Join the Iowa Arboretum for a beautiful scenic 5k or 1 mile family walk/run on our trails. A fun variety of Arbor Day activities will follow the race

The Arbor Day celebration of trees starts at 9am and is free to the public. There will be a variety of activities including tree climbing, guided by Iowa Arborist Association members. A tree planting dedication along with other activities are planned for the morning. Everyone receives a free tree.
