Reiman Gardens is so enthusiastic about insects that we set aside a special day just for them ever year. Our annual Day of Insects brings together professionals, academics, advocates and enthusiasts of all levels from across the country to explore and celebrate entomology (the study of insects). Topics often include insects native to Iowa, exotic insects, endangered insects, conservation efforts and new educational programs aimed at advancing the appreciation of all invertebrates.

Prairie Seed Stratification (Des Moines)

Learn about the processes scientists and gardeners use to help harvested seeds germinate in the spring. Learn how to stratify native Iowa prairie seeds through hands-on demonstrations and take home seeds to plant next spring. This class will utilize seeds collected during our Seed Collecting Hike at Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt on Saturday, Nov. 2. Participants need not attend both events.

Winter Forum (Iowa City)

Please join us next Sunday, January 12, at 2pm at the Iowa City Public Library, where Johnson County Conservation Naturalist Kristen Morrow will address prairie plants and pollinators. A native of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Morrow grew up exploring the banks of the Cedar River. The Iowa State University alum studied Environmental Science, wetlands, streams and river health. She worked as a backpacking guide/naturalist in New Mexico, for a watershed restoration organization in northern Idaho, and in Iowa for The Nature Conservancy traveling restoration crew. She also worked as a naturalist in northern Minnesota before settling in Johnson County.
