Art in the Garden (Urbandale)

Garden themed art for sale from local artists as well as make and take projects for adults, free children activities, and food for purchase. Visitors are also invited to tour the Demonstration Garden and talk with the Master Gardener volunteers. The event is free and there will be a door prize drawing open to all!

The Festival will highlight the miraculous migration of the monarch butterfly and will offer everything from traditional Mexican dancing, monarch tagging and crafts and activities for the whole family. We will even have a Bug Parade, so dress the kids up in their favorite insect costume!

Terrariums

Join the Botanical Garden staff as we merge plants, science and design to create miniature worlds. Learn how to design and care for terrariums and then build your own in this hands-on workshop. We will provide the ingredients (gravel, rocks, soil, plants, moss and lichen) to put in your terrarium. Please note glassware vessels are not provided. The Garden Shop has terrarium glassware for sale ranging from $10-20. Participants are also welcome to bring their own glass vessel.

Intro to Bonsai (Altoona)

Presenter Cat Nelson has been interested in bonsai since her youth, and has been actively growing them for over 15 years. Before moving to Iowa she was active in numerous bonsai clubs, including a stint as President of the Midwest Bonsai Society (Chicago). She was a volunteer working on the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Bonsai Collection, a past secretary of the American Bonsai Society, an author of one ABS booklet and several articles for the ABS Journal. This presentation is free and open to the public. There is some seating at the center, but feel free to bring your folding chair.
