Thank you to Samantha Jamison from Louisa County for creating these helpful videos!
Please note that some details may differ in Mahaska County, see the link below for clarification.

Video links coming soon...

Breeding Beef - Mahaska County only requires an ear tag OR tattoo, not both. If you have both you are welcome to enter, but only one form of identification is required for the county fair. In whichever field that is not filled in, please put 000 in the line. There is no need to check off County Raised or Home Raised, those fields are NOT used for the county fair. Purebred Heifers must have the registration number in the system by June 1, 2020 - no exceptions. Pending registrations will not be accepted. All breeding heifers must have a birthdate in the system by June 1, 2020.

Bucket/Bottle Animals

Dog

Cow/Calf - Please ignore the Feeder/Prospect Calf example during the first part of the video, as Mahaska County does not ID Prospect Calves. Cow/Calf example starts at 4:09.

Goat (Dairy, Market, Myotonic) - Mahaska is requiring three images uploaded for market and myotonic goats for 2020 to replace retinal imaging and no spring weigh-in. Myotonic has not needed retinal imaging in the past, but utilizes the same meat goat (not weighed in) 4hOnline form.

Horse

Rabbit

Sheep - Mahaska County will require three photos of the animal to replace retinal imaging and no spring weigh-in for 2020. Please shear your lambs before taking and submitting photos. There is no need to check Home Raised, as this field is not used at county fair.

Swine - Mahaska County uses the old style DNA punch tags, please disregard the middle part of the video in regards to the new DNA punch. Pictures of swine are not required, but can be added if desired. 2020 County Fair Swine - if you are waiting until the fair to tag your pigs, please enter 000 in the tag line. Ear notches are required to complete any swine identification.

How do youth obtain a Premise ID Number?

The Premise ID must be for the farm where the animals are being cared for—if that is not where the 4-H’er or FFA member lives, they will need the owner of the property where the animals are being cared for to submit the form and the 4-H’er/FFA member would use that number.  The form may be accessed and submitted on the web at http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/animalIndustry/pdf/premiseIDapp.pdfIt is important that youth obtain a Premise ID Number immediately to be eligible to exhibit and sell animals at the county fair.  It may take several weeks to receive the number, so it is important to complete the application right away.  Do not submit this form to the county Extension office, please submit directly to IDALS.  If you are unsure if you have a number on file with us, please call 641-673-5841 to ask.  Once you receive your Premises ID number, please call our office to share that number with us.

Questions/Premise ID application status: IDALS, 1-888-778-7675.

The Dog Superintendents have created a Facebook group that is open to Dog Project Members and their Parent/Guardian to join.  Please search for Mahaska 4H Dog Trainers.  They are posting weekly videos to help exhibitors work on Dog Obedience at home.  If classes can begin face-to-face, they will work on Agility.  Unfortunately, due to the 1:1 work required for Clover Kids, we are unable to offer Dog Classes to Clover Kids this year.
