Master Gardener
Earth Day was born April 22, 1970.The political and cultural worlds were in upheaval then.  In the midst of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, Woodstock, and the counterrevolution came a clear call to pay attention to humanity’s impact upon the natural environment.  Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring articulated the environmental threats posed by the post-world war industrial shift to chemical production and use, as well as the “ready, fire, aim” strategy for chemical use.  Think DDT and its consequences as an example.
