Position: Office Assistant/Assistant Bookkeeper

Reports to: Lyon County Extension Council

This part-time position provides effective administrative support to ISU Extension and Outreach Lyon County. The position requires a positive team player who works with other staff and clients to provide successful services.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with county staff and volunteers to carry out the mission of ISU Extension and Outreach in Lyon County
  • Meet, greet and assist walk-in and phone customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Manage payroll and timeclock system for Lyon County employees
  • Assist outsourced bookkeeper with bookkeeping, including development of county budget and filing of necessary paperwork
  • Assist county staff with acquiring supplies, communicating with clients and carrying out county-led programs; may require availability for assistance on some evenings or Saturdays
  • Responsible for daily opening and closing of office
  • Serve as the primary office support for the Regional Director and Extension Council
  • Provide support assistance for events and activities as needed, including marketing, ordering and copying materials, etc.
  • Coordinate with Agriculture and Natural Resources Field Specialists to provide ANR programming in Lyon County
  • Provide administrative support for horticulture and Master Gardener programs

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to pass a criminal background screening and to meet child protection and safety policy
  • Valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to multi-task, positively interact with clients and staff
  • Ability to perform assistant bookkeeper tasks with accuracy and timeliness
  • Demonstrated communication and organizational skillsand desire to work as a team member with other extension staff

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced education
  • Previous experience in bookkeeping or accounting

Terms of Employment & Benefits:

  • The position reports directly to the personnel committee of the Lyon County Extension Council
  • Position will be based at the ISU Extension and Outreach Lyon County office located at 710 North 2nd Ave East, Rock Rapids, IA  51246
  • Typical hours will be Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Work hours may vary, week-to-week, with some evenings and Saturdays
  • Wage will be hourly, funded by county funds, commensurate with experience and education
  • Employer’s share of FICA and IPERS
  • Paid Time Off, based on number of hours worked
  • Work-related mileage and other approved travel expenses will be reimbursed monthly at the IRS rate
